World Book Day – or as I call it Second Christmas – is back as it’s the first Thursday of March and you know what that means, right? Spot on; Books. It means books.

While for children, World Book Day would mean them flocking to their schools dressed as their favourite literary characters, that’s somewhat frowned upon in the professional world of adults, so we just have to read actual books and suggest new reads to one-another.

That’s where I come in. I’m an adult who over the last year or so has spent most of his time dressed like one of the grandparents in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (only less mobile) and now has some marketing-related books to rave about.

As it happens, I have one specific book to talk to you about and that book is The Practice, by the inimitable Seth Godin. Godin is somewhat of a polymath when it comes to marketing and creativity and his books widely top bestselling charts across the world, which I think we’ll all agree... is a good thing.


His latest book, The Practice, has become synonymous with breaking down walls that tend to inhibit creativity and has even garnered praise from Peter Gabriel himself, who you’d think would already know a fair amount about breaking down walls, given that he wrote Sledgehammer…

In his book, Godin explains how what has become known as a “writer’s block” is in fact more of a creative misconception. Essentially, he explains that there really is no such thing as a “writer’s block” and while we as a society largely view creativity as a gift, it’s a choice and skill that can be learned and honed.

The limits or your creativity are self-imposed and truthfully don’t exist; your output can be boundless, as Godin reveals in The Practice. So much of what we believed to be received wisdoms of marketing and generating content are false and even more of what we assumed to be talents that one is born with are actually choices that should be practiced and perfected.

It’s an eye-opening book that has helped so many achieve what they thought would take hours of groupthink and even more time Googling “how to come up with ideas”.
